Renewable Energy Sources For Heating Houses
It has never been more essential for houses to be heated with environmentally friendly sources of energy than right now. The pump circulates a combination of water and food-friendly glycol around a ground loop (a loop of tubing hidden in the garden). They run on electricity, so there is no need to pay for gas, oil or solid fuels and they work most effectively with underfloor heating or warm air heating systems rather than radiators.
Air source heat pumps work on similar principles to the ground source heat pumps but get heat from the air rather than the ground. They can be installed outside a house or in the roof and they generally perform better at warmer air temperatures.
There's two main types of air source heat pump. An air-to-water system uses the heat to warm water, and an air-to-air system produces warm air that is circulated by fans to heat the property.
Air source heat pump systems are compact and require no storage area for fuel but they are less efficient than ground source pumps and they do make a small amount of noise so should be sensitively positioned.
Both ground source and air source heat pumps generate less heat than traditional boilers, so properties using these need to be well insulated and draught proofed for the heating system to be efficient. This is how triple glazing comes in.
Solar water-heating systems are yet another way of using sustainable sources of power in the home. They work by using the sun’s power to heat water and can deliver somewhere around fifty percent of a home’s annual hot water. Solar power panels can be put on the roof or ground, taking in warmth from the sun’s rays and transferring it by pump or gravity, to a water cylinder from where it can be used. Solar power systems work most effectively on south-facing roofs, but can be positioned elsewhere.
There are quite a few solutions to modify older houses to make them more cost effective to run and more eco friendly. Many new houses are actually designed with these types of new products in place, but the more that sustainable sources of energy are made use of for heating all types of houses, the better for absolutely everyone.
