Green Tea: Weight Loss

There is quite a buzz nowadays surrounding green tea and its many health benefits, including weight loss. From books and magazines to show like Oprah, everyone is speaking about green tea. So what exactly is green tea and what is so distinctive about it?

Green tea is derived from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant and is full of catechin polyphenols, specifically epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a potent antioxidant. Although green, oolong, and black teas are all derived from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, green tea leaves are steamed, which prevents the epigallocatechin gallate from being oxidized. Oolong tea leaves are fermented, meaning the epigallocatechin gallate is changed into other compounds that are not nearly as helpful in fighting and preventing numerous diseases.

For around 4,000 years, green tea has been used by Chinese medine practitioners as a medicine to treat anything from headaches to depression. Presently, scientific research is providing serious scientific evidence for the health benefits of having green tea. Published in 1994 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute indicated that having green tea decreased the risk of esophageal cancer in both Chinese males and females by almost sixty percent. Recently, in 2004, researchers at the Harvard Medical School found that a compound in green tea inhibits the development and reproduction of cancer cells related with Barrett's esophagus (a ailment caused by stomach acid rising up into the esophagus causing the cell's lining in the esophagus to change, increasing the risk of esophageal cancer by thirty to forty times). Additionally, research indicates that having green tea cuts down total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good cholesterol (HDL) to bad cholesterol (LDL). A couple of other medical conditions in which having green tea is said to be helpful are:

  • impaired immune function
  • infection
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • fighting cavities
  • cancer prevention
  • slowing down potentially harmful blood clotting
  • decreased risk of stroke
  • cardiovascular disease

There is additional scientific proof demonstrating that green tea also promotes weight and fat loss. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 11/99 publication, researchers found that males that were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract used more calories than those given only caffeine or a placebo.
