Explaining Satellite Internet Cost and the Internet Recovery Act Program

In order to respond to the current economic crisis in the United States, the Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service has received funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. These funds will go toward several investments including rural broadband by satellite.

While many rural residents know about the program, they still have many questions about the costs of satellite Internet. The following are commonly asked questions about the Internet Recovery Act Program.

How do I know if I’m eligible?

Only some people can obtain Internet access through the Internet Recovery Act Program. Only residents who live west of the Mississippi River and in a rural area may qualify. However, this may depend on your exact address. You’ll need to contact a satellite Internet provider to be certain whether you qualify. People who currently have a high-speed satellite Internet connection are not eligible to participate.

How is the satellite Internet service under the Internet Recovery Act Program different than the everyday service?

The only difference is the cost of the satellite Internet service. Service provided under the Internet Recovery Act Program is also exempt from shipping and installation charges and leasing fees for equipment, and monthly fees are lower.

Will my monthly rate increase?

No changes in your satellite Internet cost will occur as long as you don’t change your service plan.

Where do I get the rural broadband equipment I need?

The satellite Internet provider will lease equipment (minidish and modem) to you at no cost.

What type of contract is required for satellite rural broadband?

A 12-month contract is necessary to take advantage of prices available through the Internet Recovery Program Act. You also must maintain continuous service, without canceling, in order to keep your rate locked in. If you do cancel, you will not be able to participate again in the Internet Recovery Act Program.
